Eliminating Violence and Gender-Based Barriers for Children in School

Every child deserves the chance to dream without fear, to learn without barriers, and to grow into their fullest potential. Yet, for many girls and boys, the path to education is strewn with challenges rooted in harmful gender norms, violence, and cultural practices that undermine their confidence, safety, and aspirations. By working hand in hand with communities, schools, and partners such as the Tanzania Education Network, we are building environments where education is not just a privilege, but a safe and empowering journey.

Our work begins with changing mindsets. Violence and gender-based barriers are not simply problems that affect children in classrooms, they are reflections of broader social norms that shape communities. Through awareness campaigns that reach into both rural and urban corners, we spark conversations about gender-based violence, child protection, and the right to education. These dialogues challenge harmful norms and open space for positive parenting, nurturing relationships, and respectful classrooms. Parents, teachers, and local leaders are invited into the conversation, because true change cannot happen unless the adults guiding children’s lives become champions of their growth.

Girls, especially those in pastoralist and marginalized communities, are often the most silenced. They face barriers not only to education, but to participation in decisions that affect their futures. That is why amplifying their voices is at the heart of our work. In school clubs, leadership dialogues, and community forums, girls and young women are given the platform to speak, to lead, and to envision futures where they are not held back by gender but propelled forward by their talents and determination. In parallel, we work with boys, building understanding and solidarity so that the next generation of leaders sees equality as strength rather than competition.

The results are powerful. More than 10,000 students, teachers, local leaders, and community members have been reached through our programs. Over 250 school clubs have been established, engaging more than 2,000 members, both girls and boys, who now carry the torch of positive change into their schools and communities. These clubs are not only safe spaces for learning, but laboratories of leadership, where children learn about human rights, life skills, digital literacy, and climate responsibility. They become ambassadors of kindness and courage, proving that when children are trusted, they can transform entire communities.

Our partnerships are the backbone of this progress. Collaborating with schools, local governments, civil society organizations, and seven large coalitions has allowed us to extend our impact and ensure that our work is not isolated but part of a growing national movement. Together, we are dismantling the barriers that keep children, particularly girls, from accessing quality education. The commitment to inclusivity runs deep: from engaging pastoralist women in leadership dialogues to ensuring marginalized groups are heard, every initiative underscores that no child should be left behind.

We recognize and value the tireless efforts of the Government of Tanzania through key ministries. The Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elders and Children leads on gender equality, child protection, and GBV-related health and community policies, while the Ministry of Constitutional and Legal Affairs supports legal reform and access to justice for survivors of gender-based violence.

We equally acknowledge the dedication of national and local NGOs, community-based organizations, civil society coalitions, and international partners who stand alongside us in raising awareness, safeguarding children, and advancing gender equality. Together, these partnerships form a united front that strengthens protection systems, amplifies youth voices, and builds a safer, more inclusive Tanzania for all.

What makes this journey sustainable is our unwavering belief in youth-led development. Change imposed from outside rarely lasts, but when young people themselves drive the conversation, lead the initiatives, and set the vision, transformation becomes rooted in the community. By nurturing leadership among children and youth, we are investing not only in individual futures but in the future of Tanzania itself. Our goal is not only to expand to more schools but to deepen youth engagement, so that the foundation we are building today becomes the springboard for generations to come.

The story of Transforming Life is ultimately the story of possibility. It is a story where a young girl in a rural village finds her voice in a school club and grows into a community leader. It is a story where teachers, once hesitant to speak about gender-based violence, now advocate for safe and inclusive classrooms. It is a story where parents learn that supporting their daughters’ education strengthens not only their families but the society around them. And it is a story where thousands of children, women, and youth, against the odds, are thriving.

In every partnership we forge and every child we empower, we are reminded that the fight against violence and gender-based barriers is not just about today, it is about the Tanzania we want to see tomorrow. Tanzania where every classroom is a safe space, every girl has the confidence to lead, and every boy understands that equality is the key to shared progress. That is the vision we carry, and it is the mission that drives us forward.
